Kitten- Safe Litter
It is very important that kittens DO NOT use clumping clay litter until they are at least 3 months old. If small kittens ingest it, it can clump in their intestines & kill them. There are a bunch of alternatives, this list is by no means exhaustive. Links are provided for reference only, we don't endorse any specific store. I find that Chewy and Amazon are usually pretty close in price, and both are convenient for shipping straight to your house. The non-clumping clay is usually the only one you can find at the grocery store, you can get the others at places like PetSmart. I'm not sure about Walmart or Target. If you like pine pellets, you can get them at Tractor Supply in a 40lb bag for $5.99.
The reviews are also just my personal opinion, and I haven't used all the different kinds. If you have used one & would like to put a review on here, just let me know, and I'll add it!
Non-clumping clay
These are clay litters with larger pieces, so they're unlikely to be eaten. If they are, they won't clump, so they're safer. They aren't great at odor control, and the boxes require frequent changing.
Pellet litter
(this is what comes in your kit)
Usually pine or paper. Pine is generally better at odor control than paper.
The pellets break down when peed on, so the boxes need frequent changing. This is best for moms who have just given birth or cats who have open wounds (it won't stick as badly), but other than those times, there really ins't any specific advantage to pellets.
Natural litters
Corn, wheat, grass, pine, walnut, etc.
Some better at odors than others, some are better at scooping.
Most will clump, so you can scoop daily & do less frequent complete changes.
Generally the most expensive.
I personally think this one has the best odor control for the price. I use a combo of this & Swheat Scoop. I found it to be quite similar to the Tidy Cats natural one, but this one is cheaper.
I think this one has the best scoopability for the price. I use a combo of this & Arm & Hammer Naturals. It does track pretty badly, though
This one used to be my favorite overall, both for odor control & scoopability, but the price skyrocketed
I tried this one once a couple of years ago, and it just seemed like it got absolutely everywhere. It really bothered my allergies, too.
A lot of fosters like this one, but I found that it left little brown footsteps across my couch.
I liked this one for odor control, though it was a bit tougher to scoop because of the shape of the bits. I found it similar to Arm 7 Hammer Naturals, but the A&H one is cheaper, so it won.
